About Brant Community Foundation
Brant Community Foundation is a registered charitable foundation and one of a network of 200+ Community Foundations across Canada. We have three important roles:

  1. Endowment building – We work with donors as community builders, matching their interests with community needs to help them put their charitable interests into action.
  2. Grant making – We are a 360-degree grant maker, providing essential support to a broad range of programs and services that contribute to the quality of life in our community.
  3. Community convening and leadership – We bring stakeholders together to share knowledge that helps strengthen philanthropy and better respond to the changing needs of our community.

As a Grant Committee volunteer, you will:

  • Evaluate grant applications based on established criteria.
  • Collaborate with fellow committee members to make funding recommendations.
  • Gain insight into the philanthropic and nonprofit sectors.
  • Help shape the future of local programs and initiatives.

About the Grants Committee
The Grants Committee meets up to five times per year to review grant applications and make funding recommendations that support the needs of the community, assist organizations in fully developing their potential, address issues to build community capacity, and fulfill the Foundation’s mission and legal/contractual obligations.

The Grants Committee adjudicates the Brant Community Foundation grants as well as the City of Brantford and County of Brant grant programs. This position is an opportunity to make a tangible difference in your community by helping to determine grant funding for local projects and programs.  Committee terms are 2-3 years, and most meetings are held virtually via Zoom. New members will receive training and typically observe at their first adjudication meeting before actively participating in subsequent meetings.

What You Will Bring

  • A passion for community service and a commitment to the mission, vision, and principles of the Foundation.
  • Some experience and/or knowledge of the non-profit and charitable landscape within Brantford-Brant.
  • Ability to assess proposals to ensure organizations receiving grants have financial credibility and sustainability, and that funded projects have feasible goals and a realistic budget.
  • Excellent teamwork skills to collaborate and reach consensus with a small group of people from diverse backgrounds and lived experiences.

Requirements

  • Committee members must regularly attend meetings
  • Participate in a collaborative, open-minded, and respectful manner
  • Adhere to the mission and values of the Foundation and the committee’s terms of reference.
  • Volunteers commit to reviewing and scoring the materials before each meeting. Typically there are 15 – 20 grant applications per round, which may take 5-10 hours.
  • Members must assess grant applications fairly, objectively, and without personal bias.
  • Members must declare any actual or perceived conflicts of interest and abstain from adjudicating any grant applications where such a conflict may exist.
  • Members must be residents in the communities we serve: the County of Brant, the City of Brantford, Six Nations of the Grand River, and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.
  • Grants are adjudicated using an online portal. A basic level of computer literacy is required, and training will be provided.
